Floating begins Monday April 21st

Fellow floating adventurers of MCPL,

Monday, April 21st we will begin to float these ten item types:

CD-BOOK, CD-BOOK-J,
DVD, DVD
-J,
LARGETYPE
READLIST
TAPED-BK, TAPED-BK-J
VIDEO, VIDEO-J

When these items are checked in at your branch they will show as "on shelf" and will show as belonging to your branch.

Okay, here's a panicky, dumb, 11th-hour question from someone who has not finished weeding her Reading List:

Can we continue to weed our collections after floating has begun?

I'm referring to that long list of items that had not circulated since 2006. I have been working my way through that list, but have not had a chance to check-out/check-in titles we decided not to discard. I recall reading that items not checked in or out by a certain date would automaticall be dropped. Is that still the case?

This is a great question, actually.
Yes; keep weeding!
We wanted everyone to have a chance to weed collections that might seem to suddenly grow because they weren't languishing in the delivery for a day or two or more...
Also:
Because reading list was not previously an item type--it was a call number, but the item type was usually PAPERBK, Cathy Greulich created a new item type for Reading List: READLIST.
Tonight (Friday, April 18) Reading List books will move to the new item type.
Titles on your weeding lists might not get changed, however. What should you do about this? If you still have the titles/copies that show up on those weeding lists, AND you want to keep them you simply convert the item type for each item you want to keep to READLIST and check it in.

Hello! I had a question about what to do with media snags on floating media items that come to our branch that used to belong to another library. Should we handle them at our own branch or should we send it to the original library? Thanks!

Please handle the media snags at your own branch--they now belong to you. The best practice is to check out the snags to a media snags shelf. Your media snags shelf should have your branch name (e.g. CLARKSBURG MEDIA SNAGS.
On a related media snags note, writing 10 digits (3+ nine digits) of the barcode on discs is the most time and money saving way to help identify discs that get separated from their sets. I realized this in a flash yesterday after I'd (mistakenly, sorry) mentioned that it's efficient to write just the last 4 digits of the barcode. It really is most efficient to have an entire barcode number, because that takes you directly to the item in question.
